Some how spring has been very sudden this year. Winter felt very long and I’ve gone from dragging my long winter coat around to pulling out my sandals in a matter of a couple of weeks.
And as part of that my tulips have flowered! Or at least one lot have, the other lot are still [...]

I was late planting tulip bulbs, they should have been in by November and I think they went in after Christmas.
Miraculously they’ve still come up, we’ll see what they are in about May.

The second type of tulip finally popped up and flowered. It’s a glorious multi coloured flower, unfortunately it did all its blooming while I was away and I got back this morning to find they’ve more or less exploded .
Here’s a close up, I love the wild colours and frilly edges, shame I missed them [...]

One tulip, a prodigy, has flowered, as have all the grape hyacinths that I don’t remember planting.
It does look like the ones on the packet. I wonder when the others will pop up.

I saw this ad on a bus station by the Dam. It’s a very cute campaign for the Osdorp garden centre.
Traditionally Easter is a time for Dutch people to head to the garden centre and stock up on new plants for spring. I know at least half my team was planning a trip to their [...]

OK, it doesn’t look exciting, but in this tub of earth there are 15 or so tulip bulbs. They’re planted about 10cm deep, as per the instructions. But not quite the 10cm between each bulb. Oh well, I’m sure they’ll pop up.
Most years I forget what I’ve planted, this year I’ve photographed the packets the [...]

I had a meeting this morning at an office in Sloterdijk, so I cycled out there through the Westerpark. It was warmish, but overcast. Perfect weather for cycling. At the end of the park there’s a large Tuinwijk, this is an area of houses set in gardens, the houses are small, some are rather scruffy, [...]
It’s Officially Spring

Today is the official first day of spring, it follows the warmest winter on record, and lots of spring flowers have already sprung. Or in the case of the crocuses sprung and finished.
I’ve already planted spring flowers, the climbing temperatures were just too tempting, so it’s particularly harsh that the temperature has plummeted and it [...]

I couldn’t resist; today is clear and sunny although there is still an unfriendly chill in the air, I bought spring plants and they’re now brightening up my terrace. The tulips in the background were planted back in January but won’t flower for another 6 -8 weeks…. I just can’t wait that long.
