The stairs in Amsterdam houses are steep, narrow, with shallow steps and a turn at the top of each floor. Particularly in old parts of the city like the Jordaan, where these photos were taken. It’s not possible to take large furniture up or down the stairs when moving in or out of a house. Instead we use the hooks that you see on the top of all old Amsterdam houses (and some new ones), with a rope and pulley system to lower large, bulky, or heavy goods out through a window and down to the ground. At the new house it’s the same process in reverse.
