A Chinese friend of mine once described the climate of Beijing as:
Summer is too hot,
Winter is too cold,
Spring is too windy,
Autumn is too short.
This year Amsterdam has taken on that climate. Summer was way hotter than we expect in the Netherlands, I think August was the hottest in fifty years. The warm weather drifted on through September and even in early October we’d sit outside in the sunshine for lunch or coffee.
Suddenly in early November it all fell over and the temperature dropped. The trees barely had time to turn the leaves yellow, when the wind came through and now all the leaves are in rainbows streams in the canal and the city looks ready for winter.
One of the lovely things about this city is that whatever the weather you can still buy flowers, this flower stall is near the Westerkerk – near Anne Frank House. People will load bunches of flowers onto the bicycles to take home. On really icy cold days the flower sellers fold paper over the flowers to protect them.
