As I went past the Amsterdam Olympic Stadium on my way to work today there was a traffic jam and hundreds of children entering the stadium, all dressed in yellow Tshirts. There was also a very unconvincing Olympic flame outside the stadium.
It’s part of a programme called Mission Olympic, aimed at getting school children to try a lot of different sports, today was finals day. Their website is all in Dutch but I’ve translated the goals below.
Sport is healthy, good for you but most of all fun! Mission Olympic has the mission to let you try all sorts of sports. No idea what sport will suit you? We can help you find the right sport.
I think it’s a great idea, and fantastic that the finals take place in the stadium used for the 1928 Olympics. An Olympics where some of today’s traditions were started including the tradition of Greece leading the parade of nations. It was also the first Olympics where women competed in athletics. I wonder if any of the girls there today knew that they were running in the footsteps of pioneering women athletes.
Amsterdam nearly lost the stadium in the 70’s to a housing boom, but it was given historic status and granted a reprieve, it wasn’t until the late 90’s that the building was restored.
