This monument on Lindengracht commemorates the life of Theo Thijssen, a writer and teacher who now has a museum and a writer’s award named after him. Amsterdam’s monuments tend to be for rather humble people – rather than politicians and military leaders as seen in other cities.

It’s a particularly tender scene depicted in the sculpture, and the lovely thing is that children often climb over it, in this case sitting on Thijssen’s knee and pulling his face!
