Ruined my day.
There was a real threat of terrorism in Amsterdam today, apparently 7 people have been arrested so far and more arrests may occur. This was following an intercepted phone call which gave specific details of an attack in the south east of Amsterdam – naming Mediamarkt and IKEA as target stores.
As luck would have it today I needed to travel out of Amsterdam in the direction of Utrecht, and the trainline goes right through this area. My train was delayed – and it didn’t stop in Bijlmer, the station closest to the crisis. However I could see plenty of police throughout the station as we raced through.
The return journey – five hours later – wasn’t any easier. Some services seemed to be suspended, and again the train didn’t stop in the Bijlmer station, which was by then deserted.
There’s just been a big press conference on TV, including the Amsterdam Mayor Job Cohen, discussing the events of the day and the decisions made at various steps by the police.
